Twenty-four casinos in Cambodia have stopped their online gambling services following a September 30 deadline set by authorities. The Commission for Combating Technology-enabled Scams, known as the CCTC, confirmed the shutdowns.
The commission said the operators ended their digital gambling services and removed the equipment used to run them. Officials warned that casinos breaking the ban could face legal action.
The CCTC did not name the 24 casinos. It also did not say how many of Cambodia’s nearly 200 licensed casinos had offered online gambling before the deadline.
The commission did not comment on Cambodia’s earlier ban on online gambling, which was introduced in 2019.
Where the Casinos Are Located
Half of the 24 casinos were in Preah Sihanouk province, with 12 sites. Seven were in Banteay Meanchey, and the remaining five were in Svay Rieng.
The services that were stopped included livestreamed gaming, football betting, and online lotteries. Online sporting bird competitions were also halted.
The inspections were carried out by the CCTC, the Commercial Gambling Management Commission of Cambodia, and provincial authorities. Provincial courts helped coordinate the process of confirming the online services had ended.
Authorities said they will keep monitoring the casinos already inspected. Other gambling sites across the country will also stay under watch.
The CCTC secretariat said operators that fail to follow the ban will face action. It said the enforcement supports security, public order, and public safety.
Casino Licenses Revoked and Suspended
The secretariat also shared details on separate cases involving casinos tied to online scam investigations. As of September, authorities had revoked the licenses of 18 casinos.
Another nine casinos had their licenses suspended while investigations continue. The secretariat did not say whether any of the 24 casinos that halted online gambling were among them.
The CCTC placed the online gambling ban within the government’s wider campaign against technology-based scams. However, it did not accuse the 24 inspected casinos of taking part in scams.
Investigations into casinos linked to technology-related fraud involve several agencies. These include the Commercial Gambling Management Commission, judicial police, provincial prosecutors and courts, and the Cambodia Financial Intelligence Unit.
The CCTC said it has worked with other authorities to clear more than 600 locations tied to technology-based scams across Cambodia. The commission said this work is ongoing as it gathers information and looks into possible cases.
Officials are also working to seize assets connected to criminal activity. The secretariat said it is coordinating with relevant agencies on this effort.
The commission asked the public, partner groups, and international institutions to share information that could help investigations. It said all leads will be reviewed, especially those involving casinos.
The CCTC’s latest update confirms that at least 24 casinos ended online gambling by the September 30 deadline. Authorities said monitoring will continue, and legal action is possible against operators that do not comply.
