Online casinos have become the largest part of Denmark’s gambling market for the first time. This is according to a new report from the Danish Gambling Authority, known as Spillemyndigheden.
The report was published on Monday. It covers gambling activity across Denmark during 2025.
Online casinos made up 38% of the total market last year. This pushed lotteries into second place after more than a decade at the top.
Denmark partly opened up its gambling market in 2012. This is the first time online casinos have topped lotteries since then.
Revenue Breakdown by Segment
Total gambling revenue in Denmark reached DKK11.5 billion in 2025. That equals about $1.75 billion.
This was a 1% drop compared to 2024. When adjusted for inflation, the total sat just under 2012 levels.
Online casino revenue grew 12.1% from the year before. It reached DKK4.31 billion, more than double what it was in 2012.
Lotteries brought in DKK3.49 billion, making up 30% of the market. This was down 6.2% from 2024.
Sports betting fell 11.5% to DKK2.13 billion. Slot machines dropped 6.8% to DKK1.18 billion.
Land-based casinos saw revenue fall 5.6%. A newly allowed category, land-based bingo, brought in a small DKK30 million.
Mobile Devices Drive Online Growth
Online gambling made up 73% of all gambling revenue in 2025. That is up from 70% the year before.
Back in 2012, online gambling was only 33% of the market. The shift toward digital play has grown steadily since then.
Mobile phones are now the main way people gamble online. In 2025, 73% of online gambling revenue came through mobile devices.
Within online casinos, slots were the most popular game. They made up 82% of online casino revenue, or DKK3.54 billion.
Roulette and blackjack each brought in around 6% of online casino revenue. The company Digitain also entered the Danish market in May.
Licences and Problem Gambling Numbers
By the end of 2025, Spillemyndigheden had issued 1,970 gambling licences in total. This included 41 licences for online casinos and 27 for betting.
Around 277 permits were issued for physical slot machines. These cover more than 23,000 machines across Denmark.
Concerns about problem gambling also grew during the year. The voluntary self-exclusion register grew to 68,026 people, up by about 12,000 from 2024.
Men made up 79% of people on the register. Most were under the age of 40.
The gambling helpline StopSpillet received 727 calls in 2025. This is the highest number since the helpline started in 2019.
Of those callers, 57% were gamblers themselves and 40% were relatives. Online casino was linked to 62% of problem gambling cases reported to the helpline.
