Rockstar Games has switched off GTA Online’s casino gambling for players based in Australia. The change appeared this week without warning.
Players trying to enter the Diamond Casino & Resort to play roulette or blackjack now see a message saying the feature is not available to them. The daily free spin on the Lucky Wheel is also blocked.
Rockstar did not mention the change in any patch notes. The company has not issued a public statement explaining the decision.
How Players Discovered the Change
Players on GTAForums and Reddit first noticed the block late last week. Many were confused about why the casino games had stopped working.
GTA dataminer Tez2 confirmed on July 28 that a new geographic flag had been added to the game’s code. That flag specifically targets Australian accounts.
Australian players can still walk into the casino and collect 1,000 free chips each day. They can also exchange chips at the counter. They simply cannot place any bets.
Australia now joins a list of over 50 countries with the same casino restriction. That list includes Poland, Argentina and Greece.
Some players argue the casino does not break any gambling laws. They point out that chips are bought with in-game currency, which can be earned through missions or purchased with real money.
Winnings from the casino cannot be converted into real cash. That has led to debate over whether the feature counts as simulated gambling under Australia’s rules, even without a cash payout option.
GTA V has carried an 18+ rating in Australia since it launched in 2013. That rating already matches the country’s legal gambling age.
Australia’s New Gambling Classification Rules
Australia’s Standing Council of Attorneys-General agreed in September 2023 to require minimum ratings for games with gambling-like content. Those rules took effect in September 2024.
Under the framework, games with simulated gambling automatically receive an R18+ rating. Games with loot boxes or other chance-based purchases get at least an M rating.
The rules only apply when a game is newly classified or goes through changes. GTAForums users noticed that GTA Online for Xbox received an updated Australian classification on July 22.
The updated consumer advice for the game no longer mentions high impact gambling. That wording usually appears alongside simulated gambling content, which has fueled speculation about why Rockstar made the change.
By removing the casino gambling feature, Rockstar may avoid the need for a stronger gambling warning label on the game. This comes as several countries continue reviewing loot boxes and other chance-based game mechanics.
Some players have raised concerns about what this means for GTA VI. If that game includes casino mechanics, the same 2024 classification rules would apply automatically once it is rated.
