South Africa’s online betting industry recorded 380 million visits during the first quarter of 2026. The data, sourced from Similarweb traffic figures cited by Tribuna, highlights how fast the digital gambling market is growing in the country.
The first three months of the year averaged roughly 126 million visits per month. Mobile users were responsible for most of the traffic.
Three Operators Control Half the Market
Nearly half of all visits were concentrated among just three betting platforms. Betway, YesPlay, and Hollywoodbets together accounted for about 50% of total online betting activity.
Betway led the pack with 94 million visits during the quarter. That figure represents close to one-quarter of all betting traffic in South Africa.
YesPlay came in second with 53 million visits. Hollywoodbets followed with 46 million visits over the same period.
The concentration of traffic among these three operators shows how dominant they have become in the South African market. Smaller platforms are competing for the remaining half of visits.
Separate data from analytics firm Blask paints a picture of how this dominance built up over time. Betway’s monthly traffic more than doubled between January 2024 and December 2025.
In January 2024, Betway was drawing 21.9 million visits per month. By December 2025, that number had climbed to 46 million.
Hollywoodbets also saw steady growth during the same window. Its monthly visits rose from 20.4 million to 24.5 million.
YesPlay recorded the sharpest percentage increase of the three. The platform went from just 380,000 monthly visits in January 2024 to 2.7 million by December 2025.
Regulators Respond With Tougher Oversight
Sports betting has become one of the fastest-growing digital entertainment sectors in South Africa. Local media reports, citing consumer spending data, have tracked the trend closely.
The rapid expansion has sparked debate around advertising exposure, regulation, and responsible gambling. Critics have raised concerns about the volume of betting ads reaching consumers.
South African regulators have responded by tightening oversight of the industry. New compliance checks have been introduced to strengthen consumer protections.
Verification systems aimed at curbing illegal operators are also part of the regulatory response. These measures are designed to ensure only licensed platforms operate in the market.
The growth trajectory of the online betting sector shows no signs of slowing. The Q1 2026 figures represent a market that has expanded rapidly in just two years.
The 380 million visits recorded in the first quarter came as regulators continued rolling out new compliance and verification measures to keep pace with the industry’s expansion.
