- The extra penalty came partly from what Kalshi called a lack of cooperation during its investigation.
Kalshi has banned former U.S. congressman George Santos for life. The company confirmed he is the first person ever barred from its prediction market platform.
The ban centers on bets Santos placed in February. Those bets were tied to whether he would attend President Trump’s State of the Union address.
Kalshi’s compliance team reviewed the wagers and found signs of insider dealing. The company said it acted on its own, without waiting for outside regulators to step in.
What Kalshi Found
According to a disciplinary notice, Santos made public statements meant to influence the price of the contracts he planned to buy. Kalshi said those statements worked. Prices moved in his favor before he placed his trades.
The company said Santos placed several large bets between February 2 and February 25. Some of those bets relied on comments he made about his own plans, comments Kalshi described as misleading.
Because the event depended on his own attendance, Santos had direct control over the outcome he was betting on. Kalshi said this gave him an unfair edge over other traders on the platform.
Santos ultimately made $17,839.57 from the trades tied to the State of the Union event. Kalshi imposed a fine of $71,356, a number that includes extra penalties on top of the profit he earned.
The company said those added penalties came from what it called a lack of cooperation during the investigation. Kalshi did not detail exactly what that lack of cooperation involved.
Santos Responds Publicly
Santos addressed the ban on X. He thanked Kalshi for taking action against him.
He then added a pointed remark, writing, “Let’s see how much longer you guys are around for.”
Santos was expelled from Congress in 2023. That expulsion followed fraud and identity theft charges brought against him.
Kalshi’s statement was direct about the intent behind the bets. The company said Santos made statements with the goal of manipulating contract prices, and that his statements did move those prices.
The case was referred to federal authorities after Kalshi’s internal systems flagged the trading pattern as unusual. That flag led to the broader investigation that produced the ban and fine.
Prediction markets have drawn more attention from regulators and the public in recent months. Kalshi and its rival Polymarket have both reported unusual trading activity on their platforms.
Both companies have responded by tightening how they monitor trades. They have also said they will respond more quickly when they spot possible misconduct.
The Santos case is now the clearest example of that tighter approach in action. Kalshi moved to ban him before any outside agency completed its own review.
The company has not said whether Santos faces any further legal consequences beyond the platform ban and fine.
