TLDR
- New York mobile sportsbooks kept $214.7 million in July, nearly double June’s total, as hold jumped from 5.19% to 11.42%
- Total betting handle fell 16.7% month over month to $1.88 billion, dropping below $2 billion for the first time in eleven months
- The state collected $109.5 million in tax revenue in July, up from $59.6 million in June, mostly funding education
- June’s low hold, tied to World Cup group stage upsets favoring bettors, had cut state tax collection by about $45 million
- July’s handle, while New York’s lowest in months, still grew 34% compared to July 2025
New York’s mobile sportsbooks recovered quickly in July 2026. Hold margins returned to normal levels after a rough June tied to the World Cup.
The state’s education fund also got a boost. Revenue nearly doubled from the month before, even as total betting activity dropped.
Total handle fell below $2 billion for the first time in eleven months. Bettors wagered $1,879,946,382 in July, according to the New York State Gaming Commission.
Sportsbooks kept $214,706,598 of that amount. That works out to a hold of 11.42%.
New York taxes sports betting revenue at 51%. The state collected $109,500,365 from mobile wagering in July.
Hold And Revenue Swing Sharply
July looked like the opposite of June in almost every way. In June, hold dropped to 5.19% as World Cup group stage games favored bettors with heavy favorites winning often.
That low hold cut the state’s tax haul by about $45 million in June. Books took in a record $2.25 billion in bets that month but kept only $116.8 million.
July’s handle dropped to $1.88 billion, a decline of 16.7% from June. Revenue rose 83.5% over the same stretch.
The swing came almost entirely from hold, which climbed from 5.19% to 11.42%. That is close to where New York’s hold sat before the World Cup began.
Knockout round games tend to produce more upsets than group stage matches. Upsets break up parlays built around favorites, which helps sportsbooks keep more of what bettors wager.
Education Fund Rebounds, Seasonal Dip Still Shows
New York sends most of its sports betting tax money to education funding. That fund grew from $59.6 million in June to $109.3 million in July.
The $49.8 million jump nearly erased the shortfall from June. For the state’s treasury, the World Cup created a timing problem rather than a lasting loss.
July’s handle was still New York’s lowest mobile betting total in months. The month lacks football and comes right after the NBA and NHL seasons end.
This kind of summer slowdown happens every year. New York took in $1.40 billion in July 2025 and $1.26 billion in July 2024.
Compared to those years, July 2026 still stands out. The state’s handle grew 34.0% from July 2025 to July 2026.
Even New York’s quietest betting month of the year landed well above prior summers. The state’s sports betting market keeps growing year over year, even during its slow stretches.
